Portable Navigation GPS mounting hints.

There are two big factors in mounting a GPS in your aircraft.

1. You want to face the unit toward the pilot for maximum brightness. Typically the screen is similar to PC screens which tend to wash out at viewing angles directly away from you. So typically you want it angled up and toward you. A simple flush panel mount may not be the best choice.

2. You don't want reflected light sources come from bright origin. For example in my SQ2000 aircraft I have it mounted near center of panel and to my right. If I angle it directly facing me it reflects a lot of outside light since that direction also faces the outside glass. The best mounting would be so that the reflected light (or the absence of it) comes from the back inside of my aircraft where there is no window - i.e. it should face a little to the right of my head.

That may be a contradiction to 1. but strong light reflection is a big problem.

For example in a Long EZ with bubble canopy and small low panel you may want to angle the unit so it faces a little below your chin so the reflected light source comes from your chest and not from outside - and not wearing a bright shirt would be better.
